In Old Norse myths the elements of truth connected with environmental reality are accessible within a matrix of entrances suggested by a web which can be found carved or painted or explained extensively on artefacts from the culture from which it emerged. Ornamentation as such reveals to us a pattern of narration which has deep roots within our cosmic view of human events. The stories told reveal complex philosophical clues of how our minds functions in connection and relation to the world. The oral traditions of narrations exemplified by The Skald have been replaced by printed matter and visual images. The visual culture which portrays myth has a contingency of truth embellished within its natural form.
The traditional forms of visual culture I have chosen to use for this particular purpose are complex patterns of individual images which together form a whole. These images are philosophical jigsaw puzzles which show and tell us something about our very existence as humans in this world.
Other ancient myths and legends have the same profound character which shows itself through the stories and illustrations which often appear together but also exist very well independently as individual artistic expressions. The narratives and stories from one culture to another may be different but on closer inspection the philosophical clues offer similarities in the way the structure of how our thought processes functions and how we relate to the world around us.
